Synopsis
Lizette Henry wakes up one morning and doesn't recognise the reflection staring back at her in the mirror. She isn't suffering from amnesia; she remembers who she is, what she did the day before, her parents, where she grew up - everything. But who she is, is not who she sees.
Alarmed, she begins searching her house for something - anything - that will match what she remembers. There is nothing. And yet there is nothing in her life that seems abnormal, except herself. She could be crazy, but her instincts are telling her this isn't the case. 


Some women might make an appointment with a psychiatrist, but Zette isn't 'some women.' Deep inside she knows she isn't the face in the mirror, and that she has to find out the truth, before it's too late.

A young woman wakes up without recognising her face in the mirror. Worst, she has two years of memories missing and her house and her life is full of bugs, microphones and means to monitor her every moves ... 

Reactions
I always enjoy reading a romantic suspense written by Linda Howard. 
I love her paranoid imagination and the details quite plausible that appear in her unbelievable stories. Certainly, there are always spies, soldiers, and heroes full of testosterone adept of gadgets and a trail of corpses and explosions... 
That's what makes the charm of her writings.

I enjoyed the plot similar to the one of Face/Off with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. A change of visage and some great intrigue in the upper echelons of politics that leaves a trail of many dead when the young woman's memories are waking up. 

A sense of paranoia that seizes the reader as one learns the circumstances that led to Lizzy change of life. Brrrr....It's chilling to know that life can be monitored as easily!

If the beginning is intriguing, yet I found a few lenghts before the heroine decides to get the hell out of her crazy organised, predictable life. 
All the details of its preparation and its shadowing by the secret services have slowed down a bit the action while still allowing to create an heavy atmosphere quite realistic. 
The ending is a little light and lacked explosions and carnage for my taste but it holds up. I was not able to guess the outcome... 

For cons, I have been less affected by the erotic dreams of the young woman with X. 
As for Xavier, it has humor, a naughty intriguing side but he could have been more developed. I found that its potential had not been truly used. 

In conclusion, my reading was interesting with the same ingredients that make the usual success of Linda Howard even though, I was not blown away. It is a story perfect for relaxing after a tiresome day...

Certaines femmes pourraient prendre rendez-vous avec un psychiatre, mais Zette n'est pas «certaines femmes». Profondément en son for intérieur, elle sait qu'elle n'est pas le visage qu'elle voit dans le miroir, et qu'elle doit découvrir la vérité avant qu'il ne soit trop tard.

Une jeune femme se réveille sans reconnaître son visage dans le miroir et avec deux ans de souvenirs de sa vie en moins et des micros et des moyens de la surveiller partout chez elle...

Impressions 
J'apprécie toujours de lire un suspense romantique écrit par Linda Howard. 
J'aime son imagination et les détails assez plausibles qui parsèment ses histoires. Certes, il y a toujours des espions, des militaires, des gadgets et des héros bourrés de testostérones avec des cadavres et des explosions et c'est ce qui fait le charme de ses écrits. 

J'ai apprécié l'intrigue à la Volte Face avec John Travolta et Nicolas Cage. Un changement de visage et un complot dans les hautes sphères de la politique qui laisse trainer beaucoup de cadavres lorsque les souvenirs de la jeune femme se réveillent. 

Il y a aussi un sentiment de paranoïa qui s'empare alors que le lecteur apprend au fur et à mesure les circonstances qui ont amené Lizzy à changer de vie. Brrrr.... ça fait froid dans le dos de savoir qu'une vie peut être surveillée aussi aisément!

Si le début est intriguant, j'ai pourtant trouvé quelques longueurs avant que l'héroïne ne décide de prendre la poudre d'escampette. Tous les détails de sa préparation et de sa filature par les services secrets ont ajouté un peu de lenteur dans l'action tout en permettant cependant de créer une atmosphère pesante assez réaliste. La fin est un peu légère et a manqué d'explosions et de carnages à mon goût mais elle tient la route. 

Par contre, j'ai moins été touchée par les rêves érotiques de la jeune femme avec X. 
Quant à Xavier, il a de l'humour, un côté méchant intriguant mais il aurait pu avoir un rôle plus développé. J'ai trouvé que tout son potentiel n'avait pas été utilisé. 

En conclusion, ma lecture a été intéressante avec les mêmes ingrédients qui font le succès habituel de Linda Howard même si je n'ai pas été soufflée. 
C'est une histoire parfaite pour se détendre avec une longue journée.
