Synopsis 

In Bee Ridgway’s wonderfully imaginative debut novel, a man and a woman travel through time in a quest to bring down a secret society that controls the past and, thus, the future.

“You are now a member of the Guild. There is no return.” Two hundred years after he was about to die on a Napoleonic battlefield, Nick Falcott, soldier and aristocrat, wakes up in a hospital bed in modern London. The Guild, an entity that controls time travel, showers him with life's advantages. But Nick yearns for home and for one brown-eyed girl, lost now down the centuries. Then the Guild asks him to break its own rule. It needs Nick to go back to 1815 to fight the Guild’s enemies and to find something called the Talisman. 

In 1815, Julia Percy mourns the death of her beloved grandfather, an earl who could play with time. On his deathbed he whispers in her ear: “Pretend!” 
Pretend what? 
When Nick returns home as if from the dead, older than he should be and battle scarred, Julia begins to suspect that her very life depends upon the secrets Grandfather never told her. Soon enough Julia and Nick are caught up in an adventure that stretches up and down the river of time. As their knowledge of the Guild and their feelings for each other grow, the fate of the future itself is hanging in the balance. 

Reactions 
An intriguing novel in which the reader travels through time together with the characters.

I was expecting a romance like "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger with a poignant love story between Nick and Julia. 
Otherwise, I was assuming a science fiction tale with spies and chases like in the movie "Jumper" by Doug Liman with Hayden Christensen. 
Well, I was quite positively surprised by the result proposed by Bee Ridgway, which was nothing like what I had imagined. 

This is less visual than action movie but much more intellectual. By following Nick's experiences, the reader understands how the chosen ones have been selected and how they travel through time. But, the informations provided by the Guild are distilled. 
It's still confusing 

Then, Nick returns into the past and the story takes a romantic turn. The veil is lifted on the talisman and its role. 
But who should you trust? The Guild or the Orfan... 

Despite my interest in the story, I found some lengths. Obviously, they are partly due to historical and political explanations. Those details are useful to set a strong believable place in time, but they weigh down the text. 

The author focuses on this first volume on the conspiracy theory, the Guild and the presentation of its characters. I might have liked more action and  fightings  However, I remain convinced that they will appear in the next volume if there is one... 

My interest was piqued and intrigued for a good part of my reading. My willingness to whether the talisman would be discovered, what its power is... led me to turn the pages eagerly.

Rapidement, Julia et Nick sont pris dans une aventure qui s'étend le long de la rivière du temps. Alors que leurs connaissances de la Guilde et leurs sentiments pour l'un pour l'autre s'accroissent, le sort de l'avenir lui-même pèse dans la balance. 



Impressions
Un roman intriguant avec lequel on voyage dans le temps. 

Je m'attendais à un roman du style "The Time Traveler's Wife" d' Audrey Niffenegger avec une histoire d'amour poignante entre Nick et Julia. 
Sinon, je voyais bien un roman de science fiction avec des espions et des courses poursuites proche du film "Jumper" de Doug Liman avec Hayden Christensen. 

Et bien, j'ai été assez surprise par le résultat qui ne ressemblait en rien à ce que j'avais imaginé. 

C'est moins visuel qu'un film d'action mais beaucoup plus intellectuel. Le lecteur doit comprendre comment Nick et les autres élus parviennent a être choisis puis, à voyager dans le temps. Les informations données par la Guide sont distilléesvau compte-gouttes. On ne sait pas qui croire. 
Puis, Nick retourne dans le passé et l'action prend une tournure plus romantique. Le voile se lève sur le talisman et son rôle. 

Malgré mon intérêt pour l'histoire, j'ai trouvé des longueurs. Évidemment, elles sont en partie dues aux explications historiques et politiques pour placer le décor dans le temps. L'auteur a axé ce premier volume sur la théorie du complot, la Guilde et la présentation des personnages. J'aurais peut-être aimé plus d'actions et de combats. Mais je reste convaincue que cela apparaîtra dans le prochain volume s'il y en a un. 

Mon intérêt a été piqué et intrigué pendant une bonne partie de ma lecture. Ma volonté à savoir si la talisman allait être découvert et quel était son rôle et son pouvoir m'ont poussé à tourner les pages.
