WHAT DOESN'T KILL HER BY MAX ALLEN COLLINS

Synopsis
Jordan Rivera is an ordinary kid with an ordinary family, until a vicious killer takes it all away, sparing her, but leaving her broken. The murders of her father, mother and brother destroy something inside Jordan, who spends ten long, mute years in an institution. Catching a glimpse of a news report about another family slaying, Jordan at last breaks her silence. Now she’s out, and she molds herself—body and mind—into an instrument of justice.

While a young detective pursues the case on his own, Jordan teams up with members of her support group, people like her, damaged by violent crime. They have their own stories of pain, heartache, and vengeance denied. With their help, Jordan will track down the killer before he can ravage any more lives. Her life – and her sanity – depend on it.

Reactions
A good thriller with an interesting plot and a corrosive heroin.

Personally, I loved how the story start. the reader follows Jordan a few minute before she finds herself involved in the staging of a killer who came butchered her family. It's intense, well written and makes you want to turn the pages.

In addition by sparing the life of Jordan, the author makes the relationship between the victim and the killer intriguing.
The reader wants to know why and how she managed to get out and survive.

Then, the reader learn that Jordan has spent ten years of her life in an institution without speaking a word. While we understand her trauma, this particular way of coping hasn't help the investigation. When Jordan is out of her silence, she forms an alliance with other victims from her support group.
From this moment, the story becomes more about trauma, drama and emotions but loses its suspensful pace.
The reader tries to follow the clues and personally, I was a little frustrated. Frustrated that the clues do not arrive quickly enough. Frustrated by the lack of means implemented by the police. Also frustrated by the inability of Mark, a police officer and high school friend of Jordan who sadly has little power of decision. I was not frustrated by the book more about the helplessness of the victims.
The injustice described is close at hand from the reality.
You never know all the details, or if your case is still a priority or not.

With a strong and intense start, the rythme slow down a little until the first murder.
While I loved being in the head of the killer, I would have loved to be more terrorizing by the narrative. I would have love to grab my book and not be able to let go of it.

There, I enjoyed my reading, but I have not felt the little apprehension that would have made the difference. For cons, I was a fan of the final scene.

A very good thriller in which a little something is missing to make a striking read.

Sentence

From Jordan: "You'll have to excuse me for being such a complete bitch. I haven't been on the outside very long. I have the social skills of a biker on meth."

BY MAX ALLEN COLLINS
