THE TOWER CHRONICLES BY MATT WAGNER

GEISTHAWK VOL 1

Synopsis :
He Lives to Kill the Dead! Written by Matt Wagner, award-winning creator of Grendel and Mage, and developed with Thomas Tull, executive producer of 300 and The Dark Knight, The Tower Chronicles is the tale of John Tower, a supernatural bounty hunter who tracks down the creeping shadows that the modern world has all but forgotten.

His harrowing missions lead him across the globe and into the darkest recesses of mankind's most dangerous places to banish a wide variety of poltergeists, demons, and other unfathomable evils to free his troubled patrons from their tormentors' ethereal grasp.

Reactions:
The synopsis sounded promising with the participation of such a great names of the creation industry for this new comics... that's why I threw myself over.

If the story is interesting, I admit I was a little disappointed by the graphics that I found a bit basic especially for the characters.

Certainly, it is in the human corpses in which lurk ghosts or demons but I would have liked the protagonists to be drawn more realistically and less distorted. For some, I'll ever swore they had abused a little too much of Botox! The faces of the two heroes, too, I have not been packed. As for the landscape, they are better made.

For cons, as I turned the pages, I focused on the story and I ignored the design. I had actions, some supernatural monsters that grew crescendo in the monstrosity.

John Tower, meanwhile, is a true UFO which we know very little of, except that he loves books and the Crusades history. This could explain the choice of his superheroes costume and his choice of weapons.
A mix between “Green Lantern” and “Assassin's Creed”.
Moreover, I find this comic perfectly suited for a video game. Punctuated with many wicked ones, the reader does not get bored.

Unfortunately, only one volume is a bit short to really judge the quality of a comic. I will wait for the sequel to really get an idea. Hoping that we can learn more about John Tower in Volume 2.
To be continued ...

THE TOWER CHRONICLES
BY MATT WAGNER
GEISTHAWK VOL 1

SIN WITH A SCOUNDREL BY SARA BENNETT

Synopsis:
Clementina Smythe is in love with Lord Horace Gilfoyle.or rather, she is certain she could learn to love him. Tina simply cannot admit to her fellow Husband Hunters Club members that the only reason she has set her cap on the old family friend is because her family is in desperate straits. Now only to convince Horace that she is a woman to be loved.

When the devilish chit approaches Richard Eversham about schooling her in the art of seduction, he is more than a little intrigued. But when he learns her intended target, he can't refuse. For behind Richard's rakish mask is a government agent after a villain who calls himself "the captain," and Richard has reason to believe that man is Gilfoyle.

As the tutoring sessions give way to so much more, Tina knows she can no longer settle for anyone other than Richard. But "the captain" is moving against them and soon Richard will have to reveal his true identity, if he is to save the woman he loves.

Summary:
Tina and her family are in a difficult position. Close to ruin, their only hope lies in a financially advantageous marriage. Therefore, Tina goes to Richard Eversham to learn how to seduce the man who could save them from poverty. But she did not expect to fall in love with her teacher ...

Reactions:
Fun, light enough this romance is a mixture of intrigue and romantic love story.

Nothing revolutionary but a well constructed romance with characters rather pleasant.
I confess that I do not fall under the spell of Richard.
However, I must admit that a man at the head of a dating agency in the 19th century has sharpen my curiosity.
For the rest, I let myself be carried away by the adventures of Tina whose methods to snag a husband are rather daring for the time.

Revenge, a suspicion of espionage and a heroine in the wrong place at the wrong time are the ingredients that spice up the end of the novel.
Obviously the happy ending will delight the incorrigible admirers of romance.

Sentences:

"For a moment he said nothing, considering her as if he were turning over a particulary delicious fruit, deciding whether or not to take a bite, and then, reluctantly, it seemed, he put it aside and shook his head.

From Richard: "Someone who was enjoying the ridiculous humour in the situation as much as he, someone he could always rely on to understand perfectly how he was feeling; just as he understood how she was feeling."

SIN WITH A SCOUNDREL
BY SARA BENNETT

Revolution Trailer

Hi everyone,

After two months of laziness enjoying the beach, the sun and the vacation...It's time to come back to work!

Ok, so maybe it was not really 2 months and more 2 weeks of holidays for me.
I also admit that the sun was not always very generous in the north of France.
In Paris, for example, it was raining all day long until the last week of July. I was freezing with only 17°C/63 F while watching the weather channel going crazy about the heat in ALL the other countries.

Sure, the first time I've exposed myself, I went from white like... (you have a good imagination!) and bright red like a...coquelicot.
Hopefully, the Olympics were there to bring some smile on my face!
Can't wait until the next ones...

And now, after already one week at work, the reality hits me: It means that the vacation are officially over and I will have to wait until next summer.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

So I try to see the bright side, before next summer there will be a ton of wonderfull books that will be released and I will be waiting with great anticipation for this new serie to start Monday, September 17

Hope I will not be dissapointed!

THE ASSASSIN’S CURSE BY CASSANDRA ROSE CLARKE

Synopsis:
Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan: she wants to captain her own boat, not serve as second-in-command to her handsome yet clueless fiance. But her escape has dire consequences when she learns the scorned clan has sent an assassin after her.

And when the assassin, Naji, finally catches up with her, things get even worse. Ananna inadvertently triggers a nasty curse — with a life-altering result. Now Ananna and Naji are forced to become uneasy allies as they work together to break the curse and return their lives back to normal.
Or at least as normal as the lives of a pirate and an assassin can be.

Summary:
Ananna is the daughter of pirates who will have to accept an arranged marriage. A deal concluded by her parents and a wealthy clan. Except that the girl has different dreams for her future. So she decides to fly away. This was without counting on the assassin that would be sent in her pursuit...

Reactions:
The first reason why I decided to read this book was the cover. Its Aladdin’s side made me dream, so I decided to grab it. Then, the synopsis definitely convinced me! The author did not offer me a fairy tale but a thrilling and captivating story…

Original! That's the word that has come at the end of my reading. This story takes you in the wilderness, at sea as well as in the forest or in the disreputable streets of the East.
Scenery guaranteed with chills and witchcraft as bonus.
Lovers of pirates, magic and the supernatural, this novel will hook you.

During my reading, I had many flashes that crossed my mind. First, scenes worthy of inclusion in "Pirates of the Caribbean." Some muscular and deadly fighting straight out of "Assassin's Creed" and then, a hint of anxiety constructed like in "Lost." So much for the decor and atmosphere!

About the characters, the strong temper of Ananna seduced me. I confess that as the heroin, I've been wanting to shake Naji out of his shell. I wish he had more verbally expressed his feelings but I found him perfect in his role of the mysterious magician. He intrigued me and I look forward to learning more about him.

I also appreciated how the relationship with the main characters evolves. They stared stonily at each other. They are waiting before speaking for fear of revealing too much of their secrets despite the fact that they are bound by a curse.
Very entertaining!

Perfect to unwind after work by traveling with your imagination!

Sentences:

From Ananna: “Hell and sea salt! Naji, you promised me that you’d start telling me things.”

THE ASSASSIN’S CURSE
BY CASSANDRA ROSE CLARKE

A CHRISTMAS CAROL BY ROD ESPINOSA

THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED
THE LIFE OF ELIZA SCROOGE

Synopsis
Charles Dickens’s holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, is given a fresh twist—with a female Scrooge! Rod Espinosa (The Courageous Princess) adapts and illustrates this story of the miserly Eliza Scrooge, who is visited by the ghosts of the past, present, and future on one fateful Christmas eve.

Reactions:
A Christmas Carol is a Christmas tale written by Charles Dickens in 1843.
Today, the artist Rod Espinosa has revisited with color and realistic graphics the story. He also imagined to turn the old Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser cruel and heartless old man, into an awful female character.
So, some others little changes occur like the work done in the factory.

The drawings of London and the details of places visited with the ghosts in the company of Eliza Scrooge are beautifully represented.
A great illustration work!

If the tale and dialogues remain faithful to the original, the whole story takes a facelift with these changes. It is always pleasant to turn the pages and to put your nose in morality that emerges.

Everyone in this time of crisis needs to be less selfish, less self-centered and think a little about others. Ditto for employers and the way they treat their staff. It seems that Dickens's morality does not take a ride and that lessons are still not learned the 21st century ...

A CHRISTMAS CAROL BY ROD ESPINOSA
THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED
THE LIFE OF ELIZA SCROOGE

BLOOD HEAVY BY S.L.J SHORTT

Synopsis
It's all fun and games until someone gets eaten.

Seventeen year old Daniel ‘Jerry’ Jericho’s life is thrown into a blender made of claws and fangs when he’s dragged into the middle of the supernatural world he never knew existed.

After it’s discovered that his blood has the ability to remove the age old weaknesses from which vampires have always suffered, he becomes the most valuable human on the planet. Drinking his blood makes them immune to silver, stakes and even sunlight. But the door swings both ways and locked inside his veins might be the key to creating a permanent cure that would completely eradicate the species.

Now he’s being hunted by a group of sadistic bloodsuckers, studied by witches, psychics and professors while being protected by a pair of vampire sisters who are constantly on the verge of killing each other. On top of all that he has to deal with teenage hormones and loyal but worried friends as he tries desperately hard to find out what makes his blood so special.

However, the supernatural world might be in for a shock because this kid isn’t going to be a vampire’s happy meal without putting up one hell of a fight. From here on out it’s hunt or be hunted and Daniel Jericho is armed, grinning and ready for some monster killing. But going up against an undead army led by a souped-up ubervamp isn’t exactly a two for one special at the Playboy mansion.

It’s going to get bloody, but that’s okay because Jerry is blood heavy.

1/8 of the Blood Heavy Series.

Reactions:
A robust and spicy flavored story that changed from the one the reader are used to browse this past years.

Sure there is some paranormal creatures but the context seems real and believable. In this book, there's action, fightings mostly diluted between the verbal sparring matches from the different characters that are very, very funny.
The language used is very contemporary, sometimes with a lot of swear words. Do not be shocked, this is what gives the feeling of reality despite the supernatural. Some dialogues between Cassandra and Claire or Goosse and Jerry are real gems really well written by the author.

As for the story, the reader has no time to get bored. He is plunged into a whirlwind of adventures while following in the footsteps of Jerry and his friends.
Friendship, family are very important themes as well as redemption. Twists, fights, muscular guns and some blood splashed on walls are scenes worthy of a blockbuster movie.
A special mention for the final battle...

A more masculine novel that made me turn the pages eagerly. Regarding the characters, they are all very endearing. Thanks to the colorful arguments between the vampire's sisters or the young smart ass psychic: Rachel. I admit I had low for Goose and his crazy hormones talk.
A real treat!

In short, a very nice first opus with which you have a good time relaxing, reading.
I can not wait to get my hands on the next one ...

Sentences

From Jerry: "I just found out that vampires are real! I almost got eaten by one - two! And you say your not gonna hurt me?! Sorry but I'm havin' a hard time trusting anything without a pulse!"

From Jerry: "Either I become a vampire's happy meal or a vampire's lab experiment? That ain't much of a choice."

From Goose: "That gun could bring a T-Rex down...but it's off limits."

From Jerry: "Holly crap, you're gonna monologue me to death are you ?"

From Joe: "If the shit hits the fan, sticking your fingers in your ears isn't going to save your life."

From Cassandra: "There certainly isn't enought time to wait for him to pull his head out of his ass!"

From Jerry: "This is Hotel Supernatural baby; you check in but you don't check out."

BLOOD HEAVY BY S.L.J SHORTT

Bonne lecture!
