Which reader are you? /Quel lecteur êtes vous ?

Reader categories

I am a careful reader. I try not to corner the pages too often, although I know it's sacrilege for many, I admit to use this technique from time to time. For convenience, laziness, I mark the corners , but I also appreciate the dedicated tools created for this purpose. Or whatever comes at hands when needed. That's how you can find subway tickets, flyers, movie tickets slipped between the pages of my books. Visual memories that gives an historical landmark. I like the idea that a book has a life of its own. But even if I carry my books in every room, they are still presentable.

During a long stay abroad, I enrolled at a public library. If for some not to resort systematically to bookmark is an outrage, to me, it's traces or unidentified objects that you are able to find on a borrowed book ... Yuck! The library is an impressive pool of bacteriological germs If I have quenched my thirst for reading, I was in the same time forced to spend a fortune on anti-bacterial gel. I will list some categories I found:

1-Lovers
:

Unable to release their book, they answer "reading" in all circumstances. Lunch in solo, Lucky! The queue at the supermarket, why moan? They take the opportunity to progress in the story.
But be careful of the uncivil behavior of some libraries' readers that have a sense of sharing. By borrowing for three weeks, you also earn a bonus snack ... Traces of chocolate, bread crumbs, piece of cheese glued to the pages, fat droplets that suggest the worst. Not to mention the yellowed page from the spilled coffee.Sometimes I eat lunch with my book but you can put Graysom's team of "CSI" on the challenge to find food inside my books. I gather that there are passionate readers that can be civilized.

1-Les Passionnés
 :
2-The curious
We recognize this group of intrepid with traces of sprinkled dried blood over the pages. Even at the peril of their lives, pursued by Freddy Krueger, streaming with hemoglobin, they brave all the dangers, book in hands, for knowing the end of their story.
Covers all curled, used as a shield against the rain, in the pocket of their jeans, the book is only a container of an extraordinary story for the curious who are in a hurry to devour it. Once finished reading, the novel ends up in the junk or worse, under the foot of a table to prevent it from moving. Meanwhile, he has served as the umbrella, as a trivet. For these readers it's ; "Out of sight, out of the heart."

3- The Scribblers
Not those whose toddlers have maliciously smear the pages with rainbow sky's colors. No, they can plead extenuating circumstances for having an young child. No, I'm referring to those who highlight with bright yellow or underline with a pen. Those who are annotate or scribble in the margins or on the cover some words or numbers.
In a public library that gives a page tear out by someone who imagine that the next reader will not notice the following passages missing...These Graffiti artists have mastered the art of books abuse without the slightest remorse. On their shelves work tools they named "books". A pile of dead leaves that should be put to good use. Pragmatists who will threw away the books they have sucked to the marrow. No feelings.

4-Bookaholic
You've started an ebook on your Iphone, begun a pdf version on the laptop, you have a magazine or two in the toilet, a book in the purse, one on the bedside table and already, you do not know what to read ... At image of the "Shopaholic" of Sophie Kinsella, these readers jump on the new releases, rare old books and can not pass near a garage sale area without buying some books. If it's your case, your a lucky one unless you're living in
a 300 sq feet !

5-Blowers
For them, reading is a chore. An obligation of a schoolboy which they are happy not to have to suffer as a grownup. Moreover, they show good will. They have one which they have already started few years ago...somewhere in the attic! But just to get to him, see how they sigh. For them, pleasure is absent from the novels and short stories. They can be tamed by technical books on their areas of activity, a bedtime storie to read for the youngest or an illustrated magazine, but why read a true crime when there is "Cold Case" on TV? "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings"? Famous and cult on DVD of course ...
Nobody's Perfect!

And you, what kind of readers are you?

Me:
I recognized myself in the one that drags the book everywhere and the draws them at every opportunity. Crowded subway where even the paperback one has no place, no problem: I will switch on an audiobook on my Ipod. And I confess loving to start different stories atthe same times ...
And you?

If like me, you've already yelled "Yuck" or worse, from the first pages of a borrowed novel ... Let's me know ...
If not, tell me what reader you are by posting your reactions ... I'm curious about your habits.

  1. I would be the bookaholic. Recently getting ready to attend an important sports banquet with my son, I was mocked by my family for sliding a book into my purse. I HAVE to. I've been seen reading a book while waiting for a rock concert to start. LOL

  3. Oh my! I am a combination reader. As to the page creasers, never, never, never. The only books in my collection with page creases are ones that have come to me used. That is a sacrlige to me. I like book markers. No cards, envelopes, papers, etc for me.
I am a scribbler in text books, my Bible, learning type books. I will mark away to my hearts content.
Mostly I am a bookaholic. I rarely pass a bookstore without stopping even on vacation. I have so many books in my collection, I will never be able to read them all. You will find books in almost every room in my house, on the floor, in baskets, bookshelves, on tables, everywhere. Books are my passion and you rarely see me without one.

  6. I would have to say that I am a Bookaholic. If it weren't for the advent of e-books, I would have to find another place to house the children. LOL!

  9. Hi
    I'm a new follower

I don't borrow books from my library since I only go there for research for my university classes or to read a book I own, so I've never found food, smears or strange droplets in a book! I'm also.. protective.. of my books so I don't tend to lend them either.

    I'm a bookaholic!
I own the Black Dagger Brotherhood series in paperback, eBook and audiobook.
I keep a book (or two if I'm close to the end of book one) in my purse, or two in my schoolbag if its during my semester, sometimes in the car, and two in my bedside table. I read them multiple times. And I don't always use book markers since some tend to fall out of the book and its frustrating. I read at work, between classes, during lunch, waiting in the doctor's office and I may sneak in a chapter or two while sitting with my friends. It drives them crazy since most of them aren't readers :)

    Love your blog!

  12. I am a bookaholic. I read 1 book for every three I buy. I will not live long enough to read all the books I own - and now I have an e-reader as well. There are books piled everywhere and my husband is worried there will no longer be room for him in the apartment!

  13. I'm the sort of reader that always has a book in hand or close to hand, reads several at once, and never ever turned down corners till I got my kindle. Now I've found highlights in the kindle so helpful for writing reviews that I'm turning down corners too. So... my kindle's bad for my books.
