THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY BY JENNY HAN
Belly’s never been the kind of girl that things happen to. Year after year, she’s spent her summers at the beach house with Conrad and Jeremiah. The boys never noticed Belly noticing them. And every summer she hoped it would be different. This time, it was. But the summer Belly turned pretty was the summer that changed everything. For better, and for worse.
In a beach house, every summer two best friends and their four children met for the holiday. Belly, the only girl in the middle of all these men, has always felt rejected by the group throughout her years relegated to the crying baby role or to the one of the boring little sister.
But this summer, everything will change. It's the summer where everybody will really be looking at her for the first time. Her heart will stop getting carried away. Between tears, fits of laughter, first love, first kiss and first break-up this summer will be the most memorable.
Smiles, laughter, sighs await the reader through the pages. There is a certain nostalgia to read this book. The nostalgia of first love. The memories of the vacations spent in small villages with a group of friends found each year.
The nostalgia of childhood memories and recklessness that goes with it. Learning imperfection and injustice of life and sharing them with your friends. This protective lies uttered by adults who, when are discovered by children, are helping them to become grown up.
I was overcome with different emotions. Joy, sadness. Even after finishing this book, I went thinking about it. I smiled a lot. This story relieve hope and positive thoughts that led me feeling good after closing it. Although the final pages talked about changes, cancer, the end of life and the pain of the living to imagine the departure of a loved one, yet I found this book full of life!
It touched me. It also gave me desire to have children, to see my best friend and stop fretting about nothing. Life is good if you know how to enjoy it!
It is a beautiful love story. I loved it!
« For me, it was almost like winter didn’t count. Summer was what mattered. »
« My heart was beating so loudly I could hear it. Everything was the same but not. They had looked at me like I was a real girl, not just somebody’s little sister. »
« It was a summer I’d never, ever forget. It was the summer everything began. It was the summer I turned pretty. Because for the first time, I felt it. Pretty, I mean. Every summer up to this one, I believed it’d be different. Life would be different. And that summer, it finally was. I was. »
« Moments, when lost, can’t be found again »
From Cam: « It’s the imperfections that make things beautiful. »
« Even paradise could be suffocating. »
