PERFECT CHEMISTRY BY SIMONE ELKELES

Synopsis
At Fairfield High School, on the outskirts of Chicago , everyone knows that south-siders mixing with north-siders can be explosive. So when Brittany Ellis and Alejandro “Alex” Fuentes are forced to be lab partners in chemistry class, this human experiment leads to unexpected revelations – that Brittany ’s flawless reputation is a cover for her troubled home life, that Alex’s bad-boy persona hides his desire to break free from gang ties, and that when they’re together, life somehow makes more sense.

Breaking through the stereotypes and expectations that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart, Perfect Chemistry takes readers to both sides of the tracks in a passionate love story about looking beneath the surface.

Summary:

Reactions:
The appreciation of a book may also depend on our state of mind. In the beginning of my reading, I was annoyed and irritated by something at work. So, I found this book full of platitudes and clichés. Yet resuming my reading a few days later, I found these clichés not only plausible but also very realistics.

Indeed, two people who are total opposites who fall in love, is often the starting point of many stories. In this book, Simone Elkeles writes about two characters from two different backgrounds, with a difference of social class and a lot of certainties that come from these differences.

But even if these are clichés with Hispanic gangs, it could have been with blacks as in the movie "Save the Last Dance" or the Yakuza, the Mafia ... The truth is that our century continues to work with prejudices, preconceptions, and that violence is present in our daily lives in many forms.

The author also manages to address issues as the responsibilities placed on the shoulders of teenagers who should be protected and not act as adults. It was already the case in "Paradise". In this novel, the author still manages to subtly point out the failures of families, couples.

Nobody can be perfect and the pursuit of perfection can only bring frustration, discomfort and depression. The key to success as Alex points out, is to live the present moment and enjoy it because everything can be removed tomorrow.

I enjoyed that the differences are singled out in a broad sense: like with the mental retardation of Shelley and the awkward reaction of the people around mental defective.
The social différences between rich and poor, the gang members, abusive parents ...
For a book for teens, it's nice to show the fictionalized life but with touches of a reality far from ideal.

I like the way of writing of Simone Elkeles. She has strong heroes and heroines but also secondary characters endearing. I liked Sierra, Isabel and especially Paco.
Replicas and exchanges between the characters are full of humor, biting and peps. This gives a lively reading, pleasant while causing you to ask questions. Right time perspective with this book ! Even if I will stay a fan of
"Paradise" but it's my personal opinion

Impressions
:

  1. Had a friend who read this said it was the best. I didn't really listen because don't love romance books but looks good. Will read someday.
