NEVER KISS A RAKE BY ANNE STUART

SCANDAL AT THE HOUSE OF RUSSELL VOL 1

Synopsis
Anguished by death. Driven by revenge.

Bryony Russell and her two sisters are left destitute by the disgrace and unexpected death of their father, a wealthy shipping magnate. He left a cryptic note, and Bryony is determined to find the real villain and clear her father’s name. In disguise as a servant, Bryony infiltrates the home of her father’s business partner to find proof of his guilt…or innocence. It’s not just clues that Bryony finds, but temptation too…

Adrian Bruton, Earl of Kilmartyn, immediately suspects there is something not quite right about his new housekeeper. The brooding, irresistible rake plays along because he has his own guilty secrets, and his venal, scheming wife holds the key to them, trapping him in a hate-filled marriage. But against his will he’s fascinated by Bryony, seeing past the scars on her face to show her the beauty she never knew she had. Bryony must uncover the truth and attempt to preserve her father’s legacy, before things go too far and she falls in love with a man who might very well be her worst enemy.

Reactions
A beautiful romance with an entertaining couple.

Determined to clear the honor of her father and to discover the name of the culprit behind his destruction and death, Bryony disguises herself as an housekeeper and infiltrates Kilmartyn's household.
A house completely neglected by a couple, who despise each others but who stay together because of secrets and blackmail.
While Bryony tries to find evidence incriminating Adrian, she gradually falls under its spell.
Gentle and provocative, their attraction is fun to follow.

In this romance, the characters are endearing. Between the attempts at seduction from Adrian, Bryony's determination and lies and the interventions of the cook, the reader does not get bored in this family just waiting to be awakened from its misfortune and relieved from the tyranny of the countess.

What bothered me was the espionage side. There is not enough suspense. Very quickly, Bryony surprises the countess' lover snooping around and without much explanations, the mean and superficial shrew evaporates. Regarding the disappearance of his wife, Adrian is the ideal culprit.

I was a little disappointed at the lack of development of this part. Certainly, Bryony has doubts but the anticipation and fear is not enough present.
If the suspense was worked as beautifully as the sensual enticements of Adrian, it would have enriched the story.

The outcome is also wrapped up a bit too quickly. The villain does not have a real ending and that even if the case is closed, questions remain unanswered. Including Adrian's past or what become of the sisters.

This book is enjoyable for its romance and its characters, the espionage thriller side seemed less successful. I hope so answers will be given in the next volume of the Russell's sisters...

SCANDAL AT THE HOUSE OF RUSSELL VOL 1
