BLACKBIRDS BY CHUCK WENDIG
Synopsis
Miriam Black knows when you will die. She’s foreseen hundreds of car crashes, heart attacks, strokes, and suicides.
But when Miriam hitches a ride with Louis Darling and shakes his hand, she sees that in thirty days Louis will be murdered while he calls her name. Louis will die because he met her, and she will be the next victim. No matter what she does she can’t save Louis. But if she wants to stay alive, she’ll have to try.
Summary:
Miriam has the gift of seeing the death of people just by touching them. Yet she never manages to save people from their fate. But a strange meeting will make her attempt to try the impossible ...
Reactions:
A funny book.
Strange in the sense that I was quite surprised by the story. The reader follows in the footsteps of Miriam, a young woman who forsee people's death whenever she touches them. If the initial idea interested me when reading the synopsis, the result was even more surprising.
Not easy to come back home and open this book that described the death of strangers. It gives goose bumps, but also a feeling of discomfort. You cannot stop thinking about Miriam's gift. If it was you, would you be also crazy, suicidal and as unstable as the character? Would you want to use this gift to save or to rob people?
But all powers come with a high price to pay... The reader follow the eccentricities of this girl who keeps spouting obscenities. Her language is full of "fuck this", "fuck that" that is part of her charm. Her bad mouth full of trash is also a shell to keep people at bay. Yet, it can also discourage the reader if he has a pure and chaste ear.
After finishing this story, I admit that some scenes are difficult but also in others I have laughed very aloud. It's unexepected in a world full of death byt there is a lot of humour. This story is a bit demented at first but in the second part after meeting Louis, Ashley and hired killers, a really pursuit race begin against fate.
Paradoxically, when the story takes violent and fatalistic turns, the author shows us more flaws and weaknesses inside the characters. So there is a change the registry and Miriam becomes moving despite all her beatings.
Violent, bloody, touching and fun, this might be a good crazy scenario for the fan of Quentin Tarantino's works.
Sentences
From Miriam: « You're the king of fellow who'll eat every candy out of the chocolate box. Variety is the spice of life, good for you. »
From Miriam: « Fate's already got everything mapped out. This conversation we're having ? It's already on the books. It's already been written. We feel like we have control over it, but we don't. »
From Miriam: « No, I will not marry you. The baby's not yours. It's a mixed-race baby, and last I checked, you don't look Eskimo. »
From Frankie: You're one broken cookie »
From Louis: « Things happen in this life. Sometimes they're good things, and sometimes they're bad things. You have to come to terms with the bad things, espacially when you can't change them. »
BLACKBIRDS BY CHUCK WENDIG

Finished reading this one a while.
ReplyDeleteWhat a disturbing horror read.
In many ways grows on you and you really want to know what happens to Miriam Black.
Kept thinking about scenes of Louis's eye socket open and gouged. The imagery practically is sharp.
Had a interesting time with this book.
*Great layout on the blog, Lucie*
I've been looking for some really great horror books. Probably will add this one to my to be read list as both of you Lucie and Cassandra said that this is a horror read. Most of the time, books titled as horror books disappoint me because they are not scary at all:D So a this is a huge problem to find perfect reads.
DeleteInteresting title, and review...eager to read!
